We'll talk about healing modalities for OCD, but that doesn't limit us to explore any other areas on your mind (anxiety, stress, body image, you name it!).

Let's also make some space for anyone feeling a reaction to the term OCD. Believe us, we also have reactions to using labels and yet sometimes that language really helps us feel validated and seen when we work with a therapist who REALLY gets it . All you have to do is come as you are, share your story from your own words, and know we've got your back to guide you with a judgment-free voice as you deepen the connection, trust, and compassion for yourself.

We all need that safe space to just be us

Curious to Learn More? Here’s the Deep Dive on OCD Therapy at MT

ocd therapists

Well, let's start with what OCD is

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) diagnosis and OCD-like symptoms can be all-consuming. Have you ever had the experience where an unwanted thought, feeling, or image lives SO rent free in your mind, that you feel like it will never go away?

This internal experience becomes SO unpleasant that you try everything you can think of to "get rid of it," such as engaging in a certain behavior repetitively, asking your loved ones for reassurance, spending a ton of time checking to make sure you did (or didn't do) something, made your work absolutely perfect, or spent hours and hours "figuring it out" to make it feel better?

Maybe it feels like your strategy did the trick, but only temporarily. You notice that the more and more you experience this cycle, the worse and more intense these feelings become. So, what does OCD feel like? How do you know if a therapist trained to support OCD is the right approach? While you don't need to have all the answers (that's just exhausting), it can also feel good to have some examples.

OCD *may* feel like:

  • Recurring thoughts that are sometimes upsetting or disruptive

  • Feelings of anxiety or worry when thoughts stir up

  • Repetitive behaviors that feel soothing

  • A desire to control a situation

  • A cyclical nature to thoughts that lead to action (whether that action is wanted or unwanted)

  • A pull towards symmetry and order, arranging, or organizing

  • Intrusive thoughts about contamination or sickness

And, it could also look a million other ways! We're here to listen closely, make recommendations, and ultimately take your lead on what's feeling most important to tackle.

Getting to the heart of it all, together

Ever wonder where the heck OCD even comes from? This question can live rent free in your mind or maybe you have some thoughts about the answer that feels true to you. It's never the same for everyone, and digging into the root of OCD-like behaviors gives us this beautiful roadmap to finding relief and understanding yourself that much more.

Everything from biology, genetics, and environment can impact OCD. Then you add in big life events, transitions, stress, and trauma that can trigger symptoms. It's ok if this makes all the sense and still feels SO damn frustrating at the same time.

We're here to learn about your story and get to the heart of your experience, where all the insight can flow to guide you to empowerment. You never have to carry it all alone.

Getting clear on causes and triggers of stress in modern life

We're not shocking anyone by pointing out how insane this world can feel with new stressors popping up through notifications, apps, and texts all day long. That adds to things like work stress, financial worry, relationship challenges, external pressures, and an "always on" lifestyle. Additionally, we know the unique identities we hold can bring additional, often unseen and unacknowledged stressors within the systems we inhabit.

Most people endure some level of stress, but your reaction to stressors and what feels the most triggering differs and that's the beauty of looking deeper at your unique experience to find new ways to balance it all.

Nerding out a little on OCD therapy approaches

It's our life mission to show up in the way you need us, which brings us to exciting trainings and hearing new perspectives all the time. Because let's get real, no one wants the same old stale approach that you can get anywhere. This is all about holding you up and never saying no to ways we can go above and beyond.

Curious about the technical stuff? Here are some of the approaches we use:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP therapy)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

While these are a few approaches that can be super effective for OCD, know that we also make space for anything else that shows up and feels supportive to your journey.

  • Great question! It can be confusing, right? Remembering we're allergic to labels (because understanding people in context matters way more to us), OCD is related to anxiety but technically not the same experience for many people. Think of OCD as the consistent cycle of unwanted thoughts or internal experiences that often lead to a or desire to reduce those feelings of discomfort. That can for sure lead to anxiety over time, but there's some really cool research helping us tailor care specifically for OCD.

At the same time, we're looking at you as a whole person and if OCD and anxiety are both key players in your current story, we're here for it-meaning we are ready to support you and can lean into approaches that support you all around. No need to put yourself in a box with us!

  • Part of caring for your whole person is ensuring we have a network readily available to you for anything you may need. Whether you need a specific health professional, a support group, treatment programs, another therapist's office, or resources for family members, we'll will work hand-in-hand with you to make the strongest recommendations and ensure you're not left alone in your experience of exploring a more robust treatment plan. Consulting with a professional about things like possible side effects can help you feel prepared and informed.

We understand that conversations about various types of medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), anxiety medication, or anything related to drug administration will come up from time to time. We are always here to talk about these things with loving guidance and zero judgment if that's the right approach for you.

  • If your curiosity is jumping up and down to keep learning about the specifics of OCD symptoms, here are a few ways that OCD can show up? (technical terms that you can totally discard), present themselves for some people:

    • Contamination fear (that constant worry about things being dirty, messy, or germs)

    • Intrusive or at times obsessive thoughts (Those unwanted thoughts that we want to get rid of and may cause distress to think about)

    • Perfectionism (The overwhelming desire to get things right, orderly, accurate, the same, and sometimes symmetrical)

    • Doubts (The constant questioning of people and actions like if you’ve locked the door, forgot something, or someone has bad intentions)

    • Checking rituals (The pull to keep checking doors, appliances, or locks to make sure they’re secure)

    • Counting or repeating actions (The needing to count or perform tasks a specific number of times for things to feel safe)

    • Mental rituals (The inner voice that repeats words, phrases, or prayers to prevent bad things from happening)

*If you're ever experiencing suicidal thoughts or unpleasant side effects with a more severe OCD experience, please immediately call the 988 crisis hotline.
