Our Why
Sometimes we don’t need to repair as much as we want to grow or work through challenges with a focus on the present and future.
In partnership with our couples therapy team, we created a coaching program that focuses on those key areas of a strong and loving relationship that can benefit anyone who is:
Awaiting couples therapy and wanting to get a head start
Looking for an alternative to couples therapy that’s still grounded in evidence based skills that move relationships forward
Wanting to get even more value from couples therapy with confidence in the basics of connection, goal-setting, and support
If this sounds like a HECK YES, we’re so ready to meet you and honor what’s next, what’s possible, and how you can feel EVEN MORE connected to one another as life evolves (as it always does).
What It Is
With some creativity, a ton of heart, and so much intention to bring our signature MT Wellness program to couples, we built sessions that align to the most important and fundamental areas of successful relationships.
We’ve both sat on the couch with our own partners across from healers who helped us have those “wow, I’ve never even thought of it that way” moments. We’ve also walked through the struggles of feeling disconnected, moving through transition, managing stress, career shifts, conflict, and so many other human moments. You’re safe with us, and so seen in anything you’re experiencing.
Coaching is about the present and the future of your relationship.
In each session, your relationship coach will ask powerful and probing questions, start new conversations, offer different perspectives and teaching points, experiment and explore, and always help you both choose action steps that move your relationship forward. We’re here to help bring intention, reflection, accountability, and mutual empowerment to your relationship.
All you need is a growth-mindset to be open to what you might learn about yourself and your partner. We love to work with partners who are ready to embrace the transformation that comes when you feel SO seen and empowered with actionable skills and habits.

Is a relationship coach the same as a therapist?
A relationship coach is not the same as a therapist, but may touch on similar foundational topics in session. For example, our MT coaches work hand in hand with our couples therapists to identify sound and research-informed strategies to support personal growth for relationships, and the individuals themselves. The coaching process is about the present and the future of your relationship.
In each session, your coach will ask powerful and probing questions, start new conversations, offer different perspectives and teaching points, experiment and explore, and always help you both choose action steps that move your relationship forward. We’re here to help bring intention, reflection, accountability, and mutual empowerment to your relationship.
Our life coaches regularly receive trainings that support work by Julie and John Gottman at The Gottman Institute, and Dr. Stan Tatkin PsyD MFT.
How can a relationship coach help me?
Relationship coach training supports our practitioners to approach couples with life coaching and mind-body coaching skills that encompass the areas in which partners can understand one another on the deepest levels and grow together, honoring what they envision as a healthy relationship.
Do we have to be married to build skills for dating and intimacy?
Y'all we support partners at any phase and LOVE the idea that any partners can feel more connected regardless of how long they've been together. You don't need to be married or together for any length of time to benefit from skills that can apply to a lifetime of relationship support. Even if you're looking to dust off your foundations in communication and conflict, we got you.
Does relationship coaching include work from Gottman?
Yes! In fact, our coaching program was inspired by the Gottman Sound Relationship House and many founding principles of a strong couple. We love to learn from therapeutic techniques and adapt them in a way that focuses on forward-looking activities to support our couples. Each session leaves you with research-based insights to implement in your lives between our time together, and bring with you as the strongest foundation possible heading into couples therapy if you choose to pursue it in the future.
What topics are covered in relationship coaching?
Areas we cover include:
Communication skills and active listening, as well as asking for what you need in weekly State of the Union meetings (Check out our recent blog on this topic)
Conflict management centered in empathy and sincerity
Understanding one another, from how to ground your partner in stressful times to one another's love languages
Visions for the future and goals related to the love life you hope to have together, with actionable relationship advice to build that together
How to maintain the love in romantic relationships in moments of transition such as parenthood, or stagnancy
Can I view testimonials or read blog posts to get to know MT coaches?
You sure can! Learn all about coaching at Modern Therapy for individuals and couples, as well as testimonials from those who've experienced this space and couldn't wait to share their thoughts. We also regularly update the Modern Therapy blog with contributions from our relationship coach team so you're always equipped with free resources for personal growth and how to work as a team in your couple.
